Abstract for session at TDWI Conference, Amsterdam, November 18-19, 2007.

Talk at DMIQ Conference Europe
Sandra and I just did a very successful talk at the DMIQ Conference Europe in London. Good evaluation (8.5 out of 10). Have a look at the abstract at DMIQ Conference Europe 2008.

Sander Hoogendoorn, Chief architect ADP

BI projects are highly dynamic and can benefit massively from frequent customer feedback. Thus, applying an agile approach to these projects is most natural. During this interactive talk Sander Hoogendoorn and Sandra Wennemers will demonstrate how agile software development matches business intelligence, and how UML modeling can serve in designing and planning such projects.

First the speakers introduce agile software development characteristics and how theses are best applied to BI projects. Next, the agile methodology Smart is discussed which applies smart use cases as main unit of both estimation and work. It is shown how the Data Warehouse reference architecture and dimensional models can be mapped on these UML models. After this introduction different estimation methods can be compared.

Next, Sander and Sandra will delve into modeling smart use cases, and how smart use cases can be used to model requirements in BI projects. After the identification of standard BI types of use cases, it is explained how activity diagrams can be used as design patterns to complete the traditional Data Warehouse architecture. Last but not least, the speakers draw their conclusions on the dimensional versus pragmatic modeling approaches.
